I thought it was appropriate to share because of my last post.

If you notice in the background, they have their cards displayed by simply tacking string to the wall & hanging the cards over the lines.

Getting ready for a Holiday Party - Wrapping

I tend to have "wrapping themes" every year. This year, I have focused on simple wrappings and antique containers. Decorating has been all about the paper pinwheel.

I can't quit using pomegranates and rosemary to garnish everything this year. I used them both at Thanksgiving to garnish the cornish hen platter and then I used them again to liven up the cheese and charcuterie platter at the Christmas Party. Each of them is gorgeous on their own, but together they add such color, texture and scents that they are just irresistible.

I love Christmas - really I do. I am the annoying person who starts singing Christmas Carols November 1. I begin to buy fun presents for friends and family as early as September. I get excited thinking of "themes" for my gift wrapping and decorating each year.

But sometimes...just sometimes...the holidays can feel like this:

It's always great to have a well-stocked bar for when friends come over. But for a party, I like to keep it simple.

I usually include:

a few bottles of Presecco or Cava

great bottle of gin (I prefer Hendrick's)

good bottle of vodka

plenty of tonic (and maybe even a bottle of diet tonic too)

sodas - coke, diet coke & either ginger ale or sprite

at least one juice to mix (usually cranberry)

I like to always have a bottle of St-Germain on hand too.

As I was trying to decide what drink to serve at this year's holiday party, I studied each of these recipes below, not being able to decide which I should serve.

In the end, I went with a very, very, very simple idea that was an absolute hit. I served Presecco with a little pomegranate juice and garnished with pomegranate seeds. It was beautiful, festive and SO easy. I had a bottle of St-Germain for people to make the drink a bit sweeter if they wished.

The Vieux Mot

The Vieux Mot

1 oz Gin

1 oz St-Germain

3/4 oz Lemon Juice

1/4 oz Simple Syrup

1/4 oz Cointreau

1. Pour all of the ingredients into a shaker and shake for about 20 seconds.

2. Serve in a chilled cocktail glass, garnish with a cherry, and enjoy!

Champagne Cocktail

From Sweet Paul online magazine if you have not seen this magazine - make yourself a cup of hot chocolate, set aside 30 minutes and let yourself get lost in his dreamy magazine.

Sweet Paul's Champagne Cocktail

For 1 Glass:

3 oz of champagne

1/3 oz of cognac

2 dashes of Angostura bitters

1 sugar cube

1.) Soak sugar cube in champagne flute with angostura bitters

2.) Add champagne and cognac

3.) Garnish with a sprig of currents

Elderflower Champagne Cocktail

Elderflower Champagne Cocktail

1. Fill a tumbler with ice.

2. Fill three-quarters of the glass with dry champagne or prosecco.

3. Add thinly sliced cucumber and fresh mint.

4. Top off with St-Germain.

Kumquat-Champagne Cocktails

Kumquat-Champagne Cocktails

makes 1 dozen drinks

2 pints kumquats, pricked a few times with a pin

Cold water
3 cups sugar
2 bottles chilled Champagne
Tangerine wedges, for garnish
1. Place kumquats in a large saucepan. Cover with cold water. Bring to a boil. Drain immediately. Repeat twice.
2. Add sugar and 2 cups water to drained kumquats in saucepan. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat immediately, and let kumquats and syrup cool completely.
3. Spoon 3 kumquats and 1 tablespoon syrup into each of 12 Champagne glasses.
4. Top off with Champagne, and garnish with tangerine wedges.

Cranberry Cosmopolitans

Cranberry Cosmopolitans

makes 10 drinks

1 bottle (750 ml) vodka
5 ounces Cointreau
10 ounces cranberry-juice cocktail
3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
Fresh cranberries, for garnish
1. Fill a large pitcher with ice.
2. Pour in all ingredients except cranberries; stir vigorously.
3. Strain into glasses, discarding ice.
4. Garnish with berries.

Blissini

Blissini

1 1/2 cups Prosecco, chilled

1 1/2 cups orange juice, chilled
1 1/2 cups pomegranate juice, chilled
Mint leaves, for garnish
1. Combine the Prosecco, orange juice, and pomegranate juice
2. Pour into 4 Champagne glasses.
3. Garnish with mint leaves and serve.

My parents have surprised me by announcing that they are flying into New York on Thanksgiving Day. This will be the first time I've ever hosted any Thanksgiving and even though this will be a very small gathering, I'm quite excited. I've already put a very simple menu together, gathered the recipes and made my shopping list of things I will need. I am sure there will be another vegetable in there, but I've yet to decide what that will be.

Beginning of the hunting and gathering phase

Every year, right after Halloween, my mind skips to Christmas fun. I know so many people think that this is way too early to start thinking of the holiday, but I like to revel in the dreaminess of the season as long as possible. So in early November I begin hunting for fun things to give and use for the holidays.

This weekend I am headed to an antique market to begin looking for things that I can use this Christmas. Here are a few things that you should be on the lookout for. As we get closer to the holiday, I will begin showing you how I use these various items to decorate and gift wrap.

Maxfield Parrish Skies

This morning, Maxfield Parrish skies woke New York City.

And during my recent visit to Colorado, I got to enjoy many Parrish sunsets.

I always associate him with puffy clouds turned peachy-pink by the sun.

When I went back to look at his paintings online though, I wondered why I so associate him with these clouds because there are only a few pieces of his work that seem to include these dreamy images. I found it funny to see how many other people associated Mr. Parrish with these same skies - you need only google Parrish clouds & you will see exactly what I'm talking about.

My mom & her 3 sisters are coming into the city for a visit next week and I am so excited. It will be the first "sister trip" like this in a very, very, very long time.

To make sure we make the very most of their time, I feel I need to set up an itinerary for their 4 days here. I have started making lists of restaurant ideas for each neighborhood, indoor and outdoor activities for each neighborhood (in case the weather doesn't act the way we think it should), and maps, Even though I live in this great city & navigate it fine on my own, when you're walking 4 other people around, you don't want to go a block out of the way because you didn't turn where you meant to, or to be the one saying for a third time in a day "I swear it was right here! Let's try the next block." So, I'm getting my act together to play the very best hostess and tour guide.

With all the planning, this week has been ALL NEW YORK for me & it has made me step back & realize all that I have at my fingertips. I'm a lucky girl.

Every time that Autumn arrives, I think she is my favorite season. Of course when Winter gets here, I love him too, but I think Autumn holds a larger part of my heart overall. I'm sure if you check back here in about 6 months, Spring and Summer will be arm wrestling for the number one spot, but for now - it's Autumn.

When Autumn arrives
I get excited to be outside in the crisp air & smell the first fires of the season coming from the chimneys.
I get excited for pumpkin ale and homemade chili.
I get excited to wear sweaters and flip flops at the same time (I never claimed to be a fashionista).
I get excited for all the pumpkins that appear in every nook and corner.

When I found this recipe, it made me giddy realizing it will make the perfect gift for Autumn. You know how she loves to play in the leaves and then warm up with a comforting drink.

I went to work this morning in a short sleeved shirt, passing people in mini-skirts and flip flops eating ice cream.

I came out of work this evening to find people with scarves and coats on and the temperature at 55 degrees.

Suddenly Autumn seems to have arrived - Just like that!

The guy I buy my fruit from insisted that Summer hasn't left us yet, but tonight it sure feels like she has.

Oh Brimfield, how you make my heart sing...

During my visit on Saturday, I took the least amount of photos and bought the least amount of goodies than ever before at the Brimfield Antique Show, but that doesn't mean I didn't have a blast!

I think my lack of active purchasing may have had something to do with the magnum of champagne James pulled out of the cooler as we arrived. The champagne and the pumpkin muffins, along with the hilarious company that joined me, made the 4:15am wake-up call SO worth it.

It's official - I am now a vintage suitcase hoarder. But who could ever pass up two for twenty dollars?!

Brimfield has never disappointed.

Now, just 8 more months until next time.

Brimfield, here we come!

For the last 11 years, I have been going to

Brimfield Antique Show at least once a year.

There are always some quirky items that make you smile and some mysteriously weird items that make you scratch your head.

While over the years I have gone with friends and family, I find that I am usually perusing this wonderland solo. So I am extra excited for the show this year because some of my best friends are going to join me this weekend to wander through the fields buying amazing things that we never knew we HAD to have.

In excitement for the weekend I'm posting the photos below that I took in September of 2005 at the show. The eclectic collections always make for great photo opportunities.

I am currently obsessed with the online design magazine Covet Garden.

I have gone through each issue multiple times because the photos are so crisp and AWESOME, the people they showcase are entertaining and their homes are always envy-inducing.

My favorite part is that they include playlists and current reads of the people whose homes they feature.

A couple of weeks ago, I was flying back to New York from Nashville, sitting in the gate area at the airport, flipping through the September issue of Country Living Magazine. When I turned page 93 to see these rooms below with the old Dick & Jane posters, I threw down the magazine & picked up the phone to call my mom.

When I was growing up, we had a few of these posters and even then they were "my precious antiques." I remember just staring at them for the longest time when I was little.

They always made me feel safe and happy.

As the phone was ringing, I just knew that these would have been among the things that Mom would have thrown away over the years (like, ahem...her wedding dress), but I had a glimmer of hope, thinking that maybe she remembered how much I loved those. I was so surprised when she told me within seconds of me asking, that she knew exactly where they were and they were safely tucked away.

Reason number 5,235 for a country house - to have the room to display these AWESOME bits of educational history.

My un-scientific research

My camera has died. It's been a good one and it will be greatly missed, but of course the excitement of a new camera has me jumping with happiness.

As I started researching which new camera I should buy, I decided to go about this aesthetically. I have decided that I will peruse Flickr, clicking on all the great photos that catch my eye & make a list of the cameras used in said photos. Of course, right now the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is winning...but considering the $3,000 + price tag attached to it, it will most likely not win the race. However, I wanted to share some of the eye candy I've been coming across during my "research."

And if anyone has a suggestion on the best camera to get (that won't require the harvesting of a kidney), I would be appreciative of the advise.

Family has called and urged me to leave the city before Irene makes her way up. I don't know if it's the nonchalance of those around me, or simply stupidity, but it looks like I'm sticking around. During my contemplation, I created an etsy treasury....because...well, just because.

I yearn for a house in the country...I do. Don't get me wrong - I L-O-V-E living in the city...love it, but I would enjoy being able to split my time between a spacious country house and my tiny, but vibrant city studio.

I associate the openness and slow pace of the country with creativity. I have not been as creative as I would like to be in the city, but inspiration still hits, so while I have limited space, I take really great notes to inspire me when I do have that front porch on which I can paint. Until then, I will be satisfied looking at these dreamy photos and appreciate not having a lawn to mow.

"Mailing" Birthday love

Last year, when a close friend of mine got excited about the mail art that I was receiving, I decided to put together a "mail-art starter-kit" for him for his birthday.

Of course the primary gift was the Good Mail Day book, but there were also envelopes, glue sticks, paper, stickers, labels, ephemera and sooo many more goodies.

It was a no-brainer on how to wrap these gifts. I wanted to make them look like they had arrived by mail, even though I would be delivering them in person. So, I got out my kraft paper, old stamps, linen twine and my postmark stamp to include his birth date and time of the party.

As you can see this was almost exactly a year ago that I delivered these packages. Now tomorrow, we are off to celebrate him again...with unlimited mimosas at this dreamy little restaurant that we have come to love; Mari Vanna's.

Erin & Clayton

My cousin Clayton married his sweetheart Erin this past weekend outside of Nashville, TN. It was the sweetest and most unique wedding. The rain went around us making the outdoor celebration perfect.

Each table had a little mise-en-scene using family heirlooms and found antiques that they had collected.

This was one of my favorite tables; it held our great-grandfather's horn.

All of the family brought flowers from their gardens to color the tables.

And this was my favorite part of all - over 20 individual cakes were baked by friends and family, and then wedding photos from both sides of the families adorned them, creating an awesome scene.

This is only one cake table of three.

Erin's creative side was apparent in every tiny detail - she's so cool.

And how openhanded of them to allow us to peek into a few of their love letters.

8 weeks ago from tomorrow, I was given a Kindle for my birthday by a dear friend. At first, I wasn't sure about it. There is something delicious about turning the pages of a book, and placing it on your shelf after finishing. But, I wanted to be grateful and give it a go, so I downloaded my first book; Bossypants, by Tina Fey. I was surprised when I finished it in less than 24 hours (not sure if that says more about the book or the Kindle...but anyway...). While I have not been reading books that will change the world (some might even promote brain-mush), I have to tell you that I have been reading more than ever with this nifty little friend. I am in the process of finishing my 8th book on the kindle...and yes, for you math fanatics out there, that means I'm reading a book a week now.

Waking to the sound of raindrops jumping from leaf to leaf and birds singing their "good mornings" is a really great way to start a Sunday.

Heirloom tomatoes and fresh-from-the-farm-corn make me think of summer dinners at Grandma's.

While I love sunsets in the city, the quiet surrounding a country sunset makes the experience more than just pretty sight.

Babylonstoren in Cape Winelands, South Africa

I realized that I never shared more photos from my holiday a couple of months ago, so I decided it was about time.

The highlight of this trip was the amazing accommodations that I got to experience. I was pampered beyond belief and have the dreamiest memories because of it.

One of the most special places of all was Babylonstoren, a farm hotel about 45 minutes outside of Cape Town. The Cape Dutch farm is nestled into the Drakenstein Valley with gorgeous gardens and vineyards surrounding the property.

There are bicycles for guests to explore the grounds,

and let me tell you - the grounds are worth exploring.

This is the jaw-dropping view as I walked into my cottage (just one of fourteen). The glass-walled kitchen/dining area brings the garden into the cottage.

The living area is such an inviting spot, especially in the evening

with a roaring fire and a good glass of wine from the

vineyard down the road.

And my obsession with white on white decor had me nearly leaping throughout the cottage, as every room had a crisp casualness that was sophisticated and rustic at the same time.

The gorgeous arrangement that you see here was like a little bouquet garni for the bathtub. As I soaked in a steamy bath that night, the scent of these in my bath water was so relaxing.

And how often does one flip through a magazine to turn the page and find the room in which they are sitting staring back at them?! It was such a strange sensation.

I did a little dance when I saw that my cottage had a Nespresso machine - one of my best friends that I'd been missing while on holiday. We reunited with sweet harmony.

Instead of flowers awaiting me in the room, there was a crate of fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden.

And who wouldn't fall in love with a property that leaves turndown (lavender) cupcakes instead of the stereotypical chocolates?!?

Since I visited in the middle of the week during low season, the restaurant was not always open. As compensation, a huge plate of charcuterie and fresh bread was brought to my cottage to accompany my bottles of wine for dinner each night. Nothing beats fresh bread with local cheeses, vegetables and tasty meats.

Even thought there are plenty of common outdoor areas, each cottage has its own outdoor space for eating and relaxing.

Ducks and chickens add a little whimsy to the gardens.

So often in this area, crushed peach pits are used for paths. It looks like reddish gravel until you get real close.

I cannot recommend this property enough as a place to escape to a simpler life. One could stay at least a week and still have plenty to explore in the area.

Six Wishes

Last year I put together a custom cupcake themed birthday outing for my dear friend Karolina. I mapped out 6 cupcake bakeries in NYC that we could walk to without traipsing all over the city.

I made an accordion book with water-colored cupcakes on each page with 6 real candles tucked into the imaginary frostings. At each of the cupcake bakeries, she got to blow out a birthday candle for a total of 6 wishes throughout the day.

Of course we rated each cupcake experience as we ate our way through the day too.

While the Cupcake Cafe was by far the most beautiful to look at, the horrendously rude service (and frosting that too closely resembled plain butter) put it towards the bottom of the list. This saddened me because with such a whimsical and happy decor and cupcakes as gorgeous as these, there should be nothing but smiles at this place.

I have never been able to figure out the obsession with Magnolia Bakery. Yes, it feels like you're stepping back into a 1950s country store and the jars of colorful sprinkles charm the visitors, but after that, I start to lose interest. Of course we stood in the ever-present line to get a mini-cake though because the 2nd wish was waiting.

I am happy to announce that my interest did perk back up with the discovery of their amazing banana pudding.

The wonderful Sweet Revenge was at the top half of the list with by far the friendliest service (who would expect less from a fellow-Hoosier?). And who wouldn't love a place that pairs wine with cupcakes?! Both the sweet and the savory treats were tasteeeee.

BabyCakes in the East Village caters to the vegans in the group.

The nostalgic store was a sweet experience.

We made it to Sugar Sweet Sunshine just as they were closing, so the "collage vibe" of the store was visited only briefly to get a tasty treat to go. Even though we were there as they were trying to clean up & leave, we were waited on with a smile.

The over-all winner was Butter Lane. While the customer service could take some major pointers from Sweet Revenge, the limited mix and match options have never disappointed with freshness and tastiness.

I'm sorry it took me so long to post something about this outing, but it was a fun one to remember.

As I fell through the rabbit hole of the blog world this morning, I came across these fabulous pancakes via Robin Baron's blog who linked me to How Sweet it is where you can find the fabulous recipe.

These pancakes just make me giddy with excitement & I cannot wait until next weekend to try them!

Saying Goodbye

This trusty, black purse has been a staple of mine for the past 6 years. It was a birthday gift from my dear friend Julie. It looks so plain & simple from the outside & then has a little element of surprise with the gold monkeys on the inside (which always gets comments at check-out counters). I've used this purse so much that it is now paper-thin on the bottom. Ink pens and barrettes poke thru the fabric, threatening to rip it to shreds. So, the time has come that I must say goodbye to this purse, a faithful companion that has hung by my side for so long. You will be missed.

Childhood memories

This little red cash register at babycakes took me back to 1978.

When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my excited response was that I wanted to be a check-out girl at the grocery store.

The fact that I'd get to punch buttons all day long seemed so dreamy to me.

I should be thankful that I didn't go that route since, among other reasons, these days there would be no button-pushing therapy, only the beeping of the scanner.

Yumminess for dinner

So I realize I should not become a food photographer, but I had to share my most recent dinner obsession. It's SO simple to make & sooo yummy.

What you need:

garlic

olive oil

salt

pepper

grape tomatoes

spinach

shrimp

feta cheese

lemon

parsley

Pre-heat oven a bit at 450F.

Put olive oil (about 3Tb), garlic, salt & pepper in a baking pan. Toss in tomatoes & coat them with the oil. Put this in the oven for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then, add the shrimp for about 5 minutes before you throw in the spinach. Let this go for another 5 to 10 minutes. Once the shrimp looks pink & ready and the spinach has wilted, take out of the oven (and turn the oven off - yes, I need these sort of reminders). Sprinkle feta cheese, lemon juice and parsley into the tomato-shrimp goodness.

I like to eat this with whole wheat pasta, but you can also just enjoy it with a nice baguette.

So I've read about other people's obsessions with Japanese Masking Tape (Washi) for years now & I just never joined the party. The tape was too expensive for what I would use it for - fun. I find that I don't use materials that are a little pricey (for what they are). When I'm crafting, I end up seeing them as "too precious" & save them for " just the right project," which means that I have them for years until I get tired of seeing them around & lose the joy in using them. But if something is more reasonably priced, I use it more freely and creatively, which is how I think the process should be. So, when I found these on sale at West Elm last month, I bought rolls & rolls of them. And now, I see what all the rage was about - they are SO fun to use. Because I got them so inexpensively, I have been freely using them and loving it.

I am sitting in an internet cafe because I've now gone 5 days without internet or cable service. Time Warner is not my favorite company right now.
It's amazing how much I rely on the internet; more than I had realized. I am sure there is a lesson in this experience - in the meantime, I'm reading books and enjoying the quietness of a life not plugged-in.

Sundays are for catching up with friends and coffee.

A couple of years ago, a dear friend's mother passed away. As they were going through her things, he said he thought of me when he came across this old typewriter. It is one of the most cherished gifts I've ever received and because of this, typing on the old-faithful holds a certain ceremony for me.

Grandma's sewing machine made so many things over it's lifespan; wedding dresses, prom dresses, baby clothes and so many everyday things. I wish there were stories that automatically collected every time something new was created on it; some detailed log of the family history that crossed under that needle.

I love New York when it snows. I think it brings the best out of people.

Everyone was taking photos this morning like it was the first snow of the season, people were helping push stuck cars, and people were building happy snowmen.

I'm sure my happiness it partly because I have no car to drive on the snow, I have no sidewalk I have to shovel and I have no bus to take. Regardless, I love it!

Sewing 101

For years I've been wanting a sewing machine to sew paper. Much to my surprise, Santa brought me one this year; I was elated. I've been slowly getting used to it & getting better at sewing straight lines. I finally decided to make something besides those straight lines & made a little apron for Miss Gaby. Apparently when she opened it, it warranted an "Oh...my...gosh!"

That was thanks enough.

I wandered through Chelsea Market on Sunday, festive white lights were still lining the hall, people were milling about on a cold but sunny, winter day and a sweet, 3-piece band played off to the side, creating a perfect, lazy-day atmosphere.

As I passed the band, I noticed a man reaching into his back pocket while leaning down to his son. I could tell this was going to be a little “moment” where he explained why he was giving the little boy money to put into the band’s open guitar case. I don’t know what I expected, but his simple words just made me smile...all he said, in his beautiful smiley, french accent was, “because musicians are wonderful.”

This is going to be a fabulous year; I just know it.

This is the best I have felt at the end of a year and the start of a new one in so long and I really think that it is because of one of the resolutions I made last year (and kept). I kept a thankful journal all year. Every night before I go to sleep, I write 3 things for which I'm thankful. This small action has really helped me keep my focus on all that I do have and it makes me feel like one of the luckiest girls in the world.

You should try it; it works wonders - I promise.
