Lee's Typewriter

A couple of years ago, a dear friend's mother passed away. As they were going through her things, he said he thought of me when he came across this old typewriter. It is one of the most cherished gifts I've ever received and because of this, typing on the old-faithful holds a certain ceremony for me.

Happy Valentine's Day

I’ll be very happy
If you’ll be my Valentine;
You’ll fill my heart with joy,
And my day with bright sunshine!

Grandma's Sewing Machine

Grandma's sewing machine made so many things over it's lifespan; wedding dresses, prom dresses, baby clothes and so many everyday things. I wish there were stories that automatically collected every time something new was created on it; some detailed log of the family history that crossed under that needle.

SNNNNOOOOWWWWWWW DAY!

I love New York when it snows. I think it brings the best out of people.
Everyone was taking photos this morning like it was the first snow of the season, people were helping push stuck cars, and people were building happy snowmen.
I'm sure my happiness it partly because I have no car to drive on the snow, I have no sidewalk I have to shovel and I have no bus to take. Regardless, I love it!

Sewing 101

For years I've been wanting a sewing machine to sew paper. Much to my surprise, Santa brought me one this year; I was elated. I've been slowly getting used to it & getting better at sewing straight lines. I finally decided to make something besides those straight lines & made a little apron for Miss Gaby. Apparently when she opened it, it warranted an "Oh...my...gosh!"
That was thanks enough.

Because

I wandered through Chelsea Market on Sunday, festive white lights were still lining the hall, people were milling about on a cold but sunny, winter day and a sweet, 3-piece band played off to the side, creating a perfect, lazy-day atmosphere.

As I passed the band, I noticed a man reaching into his back pocket while leaning down to his son. I could tell this was going to be a little “moment” where he explained why he was giving the little boy money to put into the band’s open guitar case. I don’t know what I expected, but his simple words just made me smile...all he said, in his beautiful smiley, french accent was, “because musicians are wonderful.

Happy New Year!

This is going to be a fabulous year; I just know it.
This is the best I have felt at the end of a year and the start of a new one in so long and I really think that it is because of one of the resolutions I made last year (and kept). I kept a thankful journal all year. Every night before I go to sleep, I write 3 things for which I'm thankful. This small action has really helped me keep my focus on all that I do have and it makes me feel like one of the luckiest girls in the world.
You should try it; it works wonders - I promise.

Lingering symbols of Christmas festivities

My apartment is still filled with goodies from holiday parties and Christmas visitors, reminding me that the holidays are not quite over; packages that still need to be delivered, silver still not put away, enough baker's string to last a lifetime and chocolates to tempt.

Brimfield 2010

I made the trek yesterday to Brimfield for the first time since I moved from Boston. It was such an old familiar event and it was great to be back. I am excited about my big purchase, but I will post more on that later. For now, I will just share a few of the photos.

This first one cracks me up; it's the epitome of Brimfield.
You can find anything and everything you never knew you had to have until you saw it.

Like Jumbo here...I never knew I had to have him until I saw him...but alas, it wasn't meant to be. Hopefully a sibling of his will be waiting for me another time.

Taxi!

They are filming a movie in the Upper West Side right now. As I walked across my street to grab groceries, I noticed the taxis. At first it didn't seem unusual...then I realized how many there were.

Saturday Softly Slipping By

Company coming into town cancelled at the last minute, so I suddenly have a free weekend, and that is a luxury I do not take for granted.

I walked across the street to the Silver Moon Bakery and enjoyed an iced coffee as I wrote, finally catching up on writing some letters for my mail art friends.

Bringing Smiles to the Mail Woman and me

Mail love is continuing beyond my expec-tations. When I got back from my little holiday last week, I had 16 - yes, that's S-I-X-T-E-E-N fabulous pieces of mail in my little postbox, and they have continued to arrive on a daily basis.

It's now my evening ritual to come home from work (around 9pm), sit down with a glass of wine & give each piece of goodness the most careful inspection it deserves. Each piece always brings a huge grin to my face. The fact that these "strangers" have taken the time to create a piece of work or write a letter to share with me is fantastic. I have already written back & forth with a few people so many times now that I consider them friends...no longer strangers across the miles. :)

Mail Art

I have fallen into a happy exchange.

About a month ago I stumbled upon the book Good Mail Day while perusing the book store. The second I saw it, I KNEW I had to have it.

I remember the day I saw my first piece of mail art. I was in high school & at my friend Chris’ house. It was around the time of his birthday and I remember seeing an envelope that one of his mother’s friends sent to him. It was the most colorful, glorious envelope I had ever seen in my life. It was covered in hand-drawn candles and vibrant stickers with Chris’ name & address tucked into a scroll-y little frame. It was the epitome of happiness in paper. I just turned the envelope over & over, trying to burn to memory all the little details this woman had included to make Chris’ day a little more special. I was in awe. The fact that an a-d-u-l-t spent that kind of time and effort to make a simple envelope such a treat in itself was a new thing to me. The fact that the post office let her get away with it was an even bigger surprise - how was I to know at age 15 that such fun things were allowed in such a serious world.

It was that one envelope 20 years ago that has inspired me be imaginative with my mail ever since. I have long been decorating and making envelopes from various brochure, calendar and magazine pages but never got into sharing with kindred art-mail-souls. I shared them with my friends and relatives, but not a “community” of mail-lovers.

Sooo...back to Good Mail Day. One of the authors has a fun blog on which like-minded peeps have begun sharing their addresses to be mail-art-friends. I have sent out pieces to many people on the list and have been overwhelmed by the responses I am getting. I cannot describe the excitement I experienced the day I received my first piece of mail art. I seriously had a grin on my face for at least an hour and I felt like a little kid with the greatest treasure. I got the mail as I was running out the door to run a few errands and then jump on the subway to meet a friend for lunch. I kept the little plastic envelope in my hand as I did my various errands, I would turn it over & over, looking at it as I walked from place to place...but I did not open it. I wouldn’t let myself open it until I could sit down and give it the proper attention that it deserved. So, the moment I got on the subway, there was an open seat and I just sat down and went into a little world of my own as I slowly peeled away the tape closing the envelope and excitedly read the little note from Carolee.

I have been so amazed at the letters I’ve gotten too. I hadn’t thought about sitting down & writing proper letters, but am excited to have received some fun correspondence with women who have creative spirits.
